Netflix introduces free plan to Kenya subscribers

Global streaming entertainment giant, Netflix has on Monday introduced a free mobile plan that will now allow Kenyans to enjoy premium content at no cost. The tier offers approximately one-fourth of the titles available for paid subscribers and is currently available on Androids.

The free plan will be available on Android mobiles in the coming weeks, won’t require them to procure any payment details during the sign-up and will not contain advertisements with Netflix hoping that the move will spike more users opting for a paid option with more features.

Available in over 190 countries, Netfliix has experimented with a series of plans in recent years to attract customers and grow the market. An instance is a $3 mobile-only plan in India, 3 years ago – before expansion into several other countries.

However, users will not be able to download episodes for offline viewing or to stream the digital content on their TV Set, as is the case with paid plans.

According to a blog post by Netflix Product Innovation Director, Cathy Conk “If you’ve never watched Netflix before, this is a great way to experience our service.”

“And if you like what you see, it’s easy to upgrade to one of our paid plans so you can enjoy our full catalog on your TV or laptop as well.”

Netflix has never disclosed how long the free offer will last – and whether it is considering expanding this offering into other markets.

But the free plan offered to Kenyan viewers will enable the company to gather information on how effective it is in generating paying customers, especially in the East African market that houses over 20 million internet users as it attempts to boast its growth.
