The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), after the opening of its website for online registration got the data of 203,497 eligible Nigerians who had completed online pre-registration as fresh voters, seven days after the commencement of the exercise.

INEC adopts a Continuous Voter Registration (CVR). The method allows a new voter to pre-register online, permits a registered voter to review their voter’s registration, update their Information or transfer their voter registration to another Polling Unit.

On Monday, June 28, the commission opened its dedicated portal for eligible Nigerians nationwide to commence their voter registration, in preparation for the 2023 national elections.

The Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, said that “this is one of the commission’s innovations to make voter registration exercise faster, easier, and less crowded than before. Given the lingering COVID-19 situation, the new registration solution will help decongest registration centers, reduce delays, and allow prospective registrants to schedule appointments and monitor their applications from the comfort of their homes”

According to Guardian news, Mr Festus Okoye, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, disclosed this in an update on the CVR issued on Tuesday, in Abuja.

He said that the figure was recorded as at 7a.m on July 5, as the commission met on Tuesday to discuss the CVR exercise, which commenced on June 28.

“As at 7a.m on July 5, one week after the commencement of the exercise, 203,497 eligible Nigerians have completed the online pre-registration as fresh voters.

In the meantime, Okoye stated that the full details of the exercise for the first one week had been uploaded on the Commission’s website and social media platforms.

“For emphasis, the physical or in-person registration is scheduled to commence in all our state and local government offices nationwide on Monday, July 19.

We hope Nigerians take advantage of this system. You can visit INEC’s website to register, social media handles; Facebook page, Instagram page, email address, and also download myINEC Mobile App available on Google Play Store for more update.
